Hi RCN,

We have 4 positions open in the Omics group at NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic Meteorological Laboratory through our partnership with the Northern Gulf Institute (NGI) at Mississippi State University (MSU). Come work with us on cutting-edge marine eDNA biodiversity research! MSU has very competitive salaries and benefits, and cooperative institutes are a great way to get your foot in the door to work with NOAA.

Questions about the positions should be directed to Luke Thompson: [log in to unmask]

Postdoctoral Associate
The Northern Gulf Institute at Mississippi State University is hiring a Postdoctoral Associate to help lead a global plankton biodiversity monitoring effort. This position is based at NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, Florida. This postdoc position will provide substantial opportunities for seagoing field work, molecular biology laboratory work, and bioinformatics computational work. Some experience in each of these areas is expected, but ample learning opportunities for growth and development will be provided. The successful applicant will investigate patterns of global plankton/eDNA biodiversity in sustained monitoring efforts Bio-GO-SHIP and the Marine Biodiversity Observation Network (MBON).

Postdoctoral Associate
The Northern Gulf Institute at Mississippi State University is hiring a Postdoctoral Associate to study the biological carbon pump in the Gulf of Mexico using omics methods. The successful applicant will lead efforts to understand microbial roles in the biological carbon pump by analyzing sediment trap samples collected in collaboration with the US Geological Survey and University of South Carolina in the northern Gulf of Mexico.

Research Engineer I, II, III, or Senior (BS required)
The Northern Gulf Institute (NGI) at Mississippi State University seeks a highly motivated and self-driven research engineer who is experienced and highly capable in developing databases for complex datasets and web-based front ends to interact with those databases. The datasets will consist of DNA sequence data, derived species abundance data, and associated environmental and other sample and processing metadata. The research engineer will work closely with subject matter experts to ensure the database and website provide the features and user interface necessary for use by the research community. They will be expected to develop and present training material to small audiences and via online methods. They may be asked to participate in the preparation and writing of grant/contract applications and reports and may serve as (co-)author on scientific research manuscripts. This position is based at NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, Florida.

Research Scientist I, II, III, or Senior (PhD required)
The Northern Gulf Institute (NGI) at Mississippi State University seeks a highly motivated and self-driven research scientist to develop environmental DNA (eDNA) metabarcoding and data standards in collaboration with the US Geological Survey. The research scientist will engage the eDNA research community and review the state of eDNA metabarcoding research to develop and document standards for invasive species detection. This position is based at NOAA's Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory (AOML) in Miami, Florida.
