Hi Anna, Matthew and all – thanks for raising this.
I agree with Anna that bostondh.org is a useful domain and shouldn’t be released back into the wild quite yet.
A number of us at UMass Boston are interested in becoming more involved in local and regional DH networking and activities and would be pleased to contribute to efforts to, as Anna put it, “keep the domain and maintain
a presence about the community […] and/or explore a formal structure for Boston DH”.
Perhaps interested parties could get together soon to start discussing - Matthew, might Brandeis hold onto the domain name for a while until a decision is made to shift elsewhere or let website and/or domain name go?
best,
Joanne

Hello Matthew,
Thanks for sharing this with the email list.
As Tufts will be hosting the next Greater Boston DH symposium in 2024 the question about bostondh.org came up, so I reached out to a few people to find out if anyone knew who was still paying for the domain
name (side-note: we were thinking that it would be great to host this and future symposium content on the BostonDH domain and have a landing page for the community (via Github/Jekyll pages rather than WordPress). I also heard from Simon Wiles (Chair
of the Infrastructure Committee, ADHO) who was trying to find out who was maintaining the BostonDH domain, because he was doing a survey of ADHO-maintained sites, and the domain name points to ADHO server infrastructure.
I am not in a position to offer that Tufts cover the ongoing costs of the domain name, but I would like to suggest that we the Boston-area DH Consortium have a conversation about what to do with the domain
name and web presence. My understanding from Simon was that if we want to retire the old site he could retire or archive it, but the domain name still has utility to us as a community and so I don’t think we should just give it away.
Is there interest in the community to keep the domain and maintain a presence about the community, especially for events, such as the symposium (using Github/Jekyll pages), and/or to explore a formal structure
for Boston DH? I’m interested to hear people’s thoughts. Thanks.
Best,
Anna
