Instructional Technologist

Instructional Technologists facilitate the use of digital tools and methods in teaching, learning, and research via expert consulting, support, and direct implementation. They are actively engaged with both the technology and instructional support communities at Harvard and beyond; they expand and evolve their expertise in new digital tools, methods, and approaches as needed; and they develop strong working relationships with faculty, teaching staff, and instructional support and administrative colleagues. They help faculty, staff, and students make effective use of Harvard’s vast resources, technology and otherwise, by developing and maintaining a strong understanding of instructional and technological support and other services.

 

Job-Specific Responsibilities

• Instructional design and “business” analysis for educational technology needs
• Collaborate with faculty and staff who provide support for educational technology, digital tools and methods, and related services; act as liaison to help faculty locate and make use of other groups and services as needed.
• Provide direct support to teaching staff and students using technology for teaching, learning, and research; includes email, phone, and in-person support, and occasional in-classroom support.
• Deliver formal and ad-hoc training and tutorials on educational technologies for instructional staff, students, and administrators, while continuing the ongoing development of training curricula.
• Implement educational technologies in collaboration with instructional staff. Produce media content, animations, simulations, visualizations, digital assets, and learning objects as needed to meet pedagogical goals.
• Provide user experience consulting and usability testing for software development projects.
• Manage educational technology projects as assigned, working with project teams to establish project deliverables and track progress. Keep faculty and colleagues informed of project status and accomplishments.
• Share educational technology techniques and best practices with colleagues and clients, both within and beyond the University.
• Explore and adopt best practices from other schools and institutions and “market” academic technology services and projects at fairs, other campus events, and at conferences and symposia.
• Collaborate with instructional staff to evaluate the effectiveness of educational technologies in courses and learning experiences.
• Manage and mentor staff and student workers as required.

 

Basic Qualifications

• Bachelor’s Degree; advanced degree and/or teaching experience preferred
• Higher education experience, especially in support of teaching in the liberal arts and sciences

• Enthusiasm, interest, and flexibility in acquiring new or emerging technology skills

• Some schedule flexibility required at certain times of year (e.g. weekend support coverage, occasional evening workshops)
• Experience with emerging technologies in teaching, learning, and research (TLR). These may include:
• Data science tools (such as RStudio and Jupyter Notebooks)
• Data visualization
• 3D modeling
• Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR)
• Producing animations/simulations
• Editing video
• Programming languages (such as Python and JavaScript)
