Hi Dietmar and Steven!

I wanted to forward this data viz challenge along, could you share it with IDV and NUVis? It sounds like an interesting problem to visualize with a potentially strong spatial component.

Best,
Sarah Campbell

Hi Sarah,

I was passed along your information from my colleague, Lori Low, who mentioned you may be interested in our Data Visualization Challenge. So happy to hear it is of interest (this is our first time doing a data viz competition). This effort is all part of our Caltrain Business Plan, which is looking at the future of Caltrain growth over the next 40 years.

As a bit of table setting; by 2040, the Caltrain corridor, which runs from San Francisco to San Jose and Gilroy, is projected to add 1.2 million people and jobs within two miles of Caltrain stations. Caltrain currently carries 65,000 passengers a day, but that number is projected to grow by as much as 200,000. How can we explain different choices and investments the railroad can make to help increase mobility options throughout the Bay Area? What do you think would be the best way for people to understand how the corridor can serve different communities while anticipating population increases?

We have issued the challenge hoping to receive submissions using designs, programming and visualization tools to show how Caltrain can meet the mobility needs of the Bay Area today and to analyze what it could look like in 2040 under the different future growth scenarios. How can you creatively show the benefits of different growth options on the corridor? How would a rider understand how much more service would be provided and to which stops? How do the future service options pair with future land use projections along the corridor?

Please feel free to check out our webpage, https://www.caltrain2040.org/data/ and the accompanying dataset! We would also greatly appreciate it if you could share with your network.

We have also released a blog post, calling for submissions: https://peninsulamoves.org/2019/05/01/caltrain-launches-data-visualization-challenge/

Please let me know if you have any questions and if there are any questions you get feel free to direct them to me.

Thanks again!
Ryan
