Hi Maria — picking up messages on the RCN site — and just commenting that it’s good to have this connection between USyd and UC Davis. I am collaborating with Ana Vila Concejo on estuarine beaches, who was there and met Paul Dodd from our side. I visited USyd June 2018 and Ana was here this past June; now, in a few weeks I am off to meet Ana and colleagues for some fieldwork in New Zealand. Very much enjoying the collaboration, which is proving to be really productive. Yes, I also work in dispersal and connectivity questions. Best wishes, John On Nov 2, 2019, at 1:12 PM, Maria Byrne <[log in to unmask]<mailto:[log in to unmask]>> wrote: Hi Rick We had the UC Davis crew here last week. I did not meet them this time, but my college in Marine GeoSci did and filled me in. They mentioned the fire - that is such a massive worry. I hope everyone and the lab is OK. Just to add my two cents, I completely agree that Steve’s proposition is the scale and kind of question that should be the starting point. But I wanted to add one other dimension to it, and that is, why and how is this challenge different in marine systems than it is in terrestrial and freshwater systems? As one example, beyond the physical differences in the media, far more organisms in marine systems have complex life cycles in which there are multiple opportunities for phenological mismatches. Does this increase the scope for climate change to disrupt life cycles, and require more complex evolutionary responses? Just something I’m thinking about on a Saturday morning here on the west coast, now that we’ve managed to getthrough another fire at Bodega Marine Lab.
