Abstract: Maisa Niemelä is a doctoral student from the University of Oulu, Finland conducting research with objectively measured physical activity data collected from a large population-based study (Northern Finland Birth Cohort Study 1966, originally n≈12 000), in order to study the association between physical activity and health in mid-age. The cohort study included all those subjects who were born in the year of 1966 in Northern Finland. Since year 1966 data have been collected regularly from the subjects. Most recent time point of the study in the years of 2012-2014 (subjects approx. 46 years old) included in addition to health and behavior questionnaires and fitness tests also objectively measured physical activity with waist and wrist-worn accelerometers among participants (n≈5500).
The aim is to find distinct physical activity profiles from wrist accelerometer data, which describe the temporal physical activity behavior. These profiles could provide information concerning habitual physical activity in different times during the day, e.g. does exercising in the early morning or evening has different health effects. The aim is to identify physical activity profiles in order to find out how these profiles are connected to common health indicators such as body composition and aerobic fitness. Better understanding of physical activity and sedentary behavior characteristics and distribution during the day and the week helps to target interventions for possibly distinguished subgroups in this age group.
