Maps hold a special place in our daily lives. Each day, we encounter and work with maps that help us navigate unfamiliar cities, locate our favorite coffee shops, find the fastest route to work, and many more essential tasks. However, as frequent users of maps both good and bad, we all know intuitively that not all maps are created equal. In this workshop, participants will explore what it means for a map to be designed well. In the process, we will use activities to understand mapmaking as a medium that requires intentionality and careful thoughtfulness, exploring the special design considerations that are particularly important when making maps. What makes a good map? The answer may not be so straightforward.
This introductory workshop, intended for beginners and not advanced users, assumes no prior knowledge of GIS or map design. Some familiarity with general types of maps encountered in daily life is helpful. To RSVP, please click here: https://goo.gl/forms/SKwjTjwAnufRu0yI3
